Montreal Neck Pain due to Smartphone Use and Chiropractic Help

NECK PAIN AND SMART PHONE USE: Exercise May Help

Neck pain due to cell phone popularity is rising! Young and old alike experience it. We’re all on our smartphones while walking, sitting, visiting. (In the old days, we would hand out together without phones. Today is different!) A meta-analysis of 26 published papers measuring how influential neck posture is for neck pain patients of all ages documented that the craniovertebral angle of the neck varies among them with respect to age, gender, pain (with or without) and negatively correlated with neck pain. (1) A newer study stated that the most awkward posture for head and neck angles while using cellphones was sitting in a chair without a backrest. The authors proposed some comfort in that they found some corrective exercises that help reduce neck pain severity by 36.6% and disability by 13.3%. CELL PHONE USE AND HEAD POSTURE: Lift Your Chin

Dr. Hoang's Chiropractic Clinic also shares how changing your head posture might be beneficial. Comparing asymptomatic people with and without forward head posture, researchers found statistically significant differences in sensorimotor and somatosensory processing factors with forward head posture increases. The good news was that they also discovered that with each 1° increase in craniovertebral angle of the neck (e.g. less forward head posture carriage), the somatosensory factors improved. (3) Lesson: Lift your chin up!

NECK POSTURE, FORWARD HEAD POSTURE and PHYSICAL FITNESS

Further, forward head posture was documented to alter sensorimotor processing and integration measures in people whether they were athletic or not. College athletes with such forward head posture compared to those with normal head posture displayed such concerns as well as less efficient skill-related physical fitness (like balance, leg power, agility).
