Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever had disc-related back pain or neck pain, you know how essential healthy spinal discs are to feeling comfortable through your day. Now, promising new research is examining a plant-based compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may specifically support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural cushions. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory process and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In plain language, this helps disc cells remove worn components and operate better, which may help delay the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of tissue hardening — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a critical part in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin shows promise as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help block this scarring process from progressing.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS

While more research is necessary before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings contribute to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a supportive role alongside gentle, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At Dr. Hoang's Chiropractic Clinic, we believe in a holistic approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's natural healing.
