Montreal Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think

June 23, 2026

VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!

If you've ever had your chiropractor mention vitamin D, there's very good reason for that conversation. This sunshine vitamin is quietly doing essential work in our bodies — and two newly published research papers remind us just how much it matters, especially as we get older. At Dr. Hoang's Chiropractic Clinic, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Montreal — read on to see what the latest science says about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!

WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US

A major systematic review and meta-analysis released in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 analyzed 69 clinical trials involving nearly 154,000 participants to assess calcium and vitamin D supplementation for fracture and fall prevention. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was associated with a somewhat decreased risk for fractures — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent have to recuperate from a fall. While no supplement is a magic bullet, this kind of large-scale study helps guide practical, whole-person care. (1)

The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, zoomed out to look at the bigger picture — investigating what vitamin D means for our health across the full sweep of getting older. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is associated with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a decreased risk of falling. That's big — because strong muscles and good balance are two of the best defenses against the falls that precede fractures in the first place. (2)

MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US

The research also confirms that approximately 60% of elderly individuals are vitamin D-deficient, and that low vitamin D status is associated with musculoskeletal disease, cognitive decline, cardiovascular problems, and even all-cause mortality. In other words, this isn't just a bone issue — it affects nearly every system in our bodies as we age. (2)

YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED

Here at Dr. Hoang's Chiropractic Clinic, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you in the door. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to relieve back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works beautifully alongside good nutrition. When your vitamin D levels are where they should be, the muscles and bones bordering your spine are better equipped to respond to chiropractic care — and that means what we do in the office together in the office may be more long-lasting.

Many of us, especially those of us spending more time indoors, are deficient without knowing it. Whether it's a supplement, a little more time in the sun, or vitamin D-rich foods like salmon and fortified dairy, little things add up.
